About the Resort

In March 1997, Paul and Patti Hansen bought seven acres of land from a German development company and established the West Coast Wilderness Lodge.
Egmont was chosen for its close proximity to Vancouver and its pristine wilderness setting; its spectacular scenery includes sites such as Chatterbox Falls, Freil Falls and the Skookumchuck Rapids, as well as several beautiful lakes.

The Hansens’ strong background in outdoor recreation and wilderness education led them to design the Lodge as a wilderness retreat which offered schoolchildren and corporate groups the opportunity to learn about and enjoy the beautiful B.C. outdoors.

A 7,000 square foot main lodge was built with a dining room, kitchen, offices, and lounge, as well as five mini-lodges with accommodation for up to eighty guests. West Coast Wilderness Lodge attracted students from many local and international schools, as well as business groups seeking a wilderness corporate retreat.

As Paul and Patti began considering their goals and plans for the Lodge’s future, they identified that the Lodge was well-positioned for the international eco-tourism market. Boutique remote resorts have become a highly sought-after destination by overseas tourists. The Lodge’s close proximity to the Lower Mainland meant it was perfect for corporate retreats, weddings and weekend getaways.

In 2003 the property was re-zoned, existing facilities were remodeled and additional services were added. These include an improved restaurant, front desk, a concierge, and an Adventure Centre that caters to in-house guests and other visitors to the area.

This allowed the Lodge to open up to both international and domestic travelers. As the rooms were enlarged and upgraded into luxury accommodations, occupancy was lowered from 80 to approximately 40 guests.

In 2006 and 2007, the accommodations were remodeled once again with larger bathrooms and the addition of a private balcony for each room. Due to these upgrades, the resort ended 2008 with over 160 international tour providers as partners.

Our fine dining room was recently called “the best waterfront restaurant dining room in this part of the world” by Pacific Yachting Magazine.
As our business depends on Egmont maintaining its environmental beauty and integrity, West Coast Wilderness Lodge is deeply committed to minimizing our impact on the local wilderness and wildlife of the Sunshine Coast.

For example, landscaping is primarily done with indigenous species of trees, shrubs, and plants, with special emphasis on foreshore flora and fauna. The resort will remain a west coast wilderness area that blends in with the natural rock features that flow throughout the property.

Eco-tourism adventures are our niche and we try to help the Sunshine Coast’s economy grow in a sustainable fashion. We have been operating in Egmont for the past twenty years; our resort’s impact on the community has been very positive so far and it will continue to be.

We loved the accommodation. Everything was clean and smelled fresh. We booked this place because it’s pet-friendly, which we really appreciate. But it was confusing and frustrating that the restaurant patio isn’t pet-friendly. Almost every patio in downtown Vancouver allows dogs, and so does this accommodation, so it didn’t make sense that the patio doesn’t. What are people with dogs supposed to do? I didn’t feel comfortable leaving my dog alone in a new place, so she had to wait in the car while we ate. The food at the restaurant was good, though.

So peaceful, I didn’t want to leave Stayed at West Coast Wilderness Lodge and honestly, it was exactly what I needed. The whole place has such calm, grounding energy. Nature all around, quiet mornings, and beautiful views everywhere you look. The food was so good (like, unexpectedly good), and I felt really taken care of the whole time. Everything just felt easy and warm. Would definitely go back when I need to reset.

We stayed at the West Coast Wilderness Lodge for 3 days and two nights. We had a wonderful time. We were in cabin 603, with a very beautiful view of the ocean. In fact, it was quite spectacular. The staff at this hotel are extremely friendly and go out of their way to make you happy. We had wonderful meals, with wonderful servers. Breakfast and dinner were excellent. I can't recommend the West Coast Wilderness Lodge strongly enough. We live full-time in Garden Bay, so this was an excellent staycation!

We were the 2024 winners of the Signature Package Instagram contest and we enjoyed and appreciated our 2 night stay IMMENSELY. What an experience!! Here is a long overdue, official review. We were greeted with a cocktail and enjoyed it on the beautiful deck (I can't imagine how stunning it would be when the wisteria blooms!), which was such a great start to our getaway! The views were breathtaking and unforgettable - panoramic, tranquil, and magical! The staff were hospitable, genuine, and welcoming and the restaurant staff were knowledgeable. Our room boasted stunning views and we spent many hours sipping coffee and wine on the deck enjoy the sites of the smell of the ocean, and the sound of the birds.. The room was spotless, the bed was comfy, the tub was appreciated and the serenity was exactly what we needed. A rainbow on our first evening was the icing on the cake!! The food was next level and we enjoyed every bit immensely. Dining at inlets is an experience in itself. Again, the restaurant has stunning views and a great ambiance. We enjoyed the coziness of sitting inside for breakfast, as well as dining on the deck - I would recommend both! Fresh, West-coast inspired dishes that were plated beautifully with an attention to detail we appreciate. Everything was so flavourful! We had a hard time deciding what to eat - everything we tasted was a 10/10, truly! What stands out all these months later is the chowder, seafood linguine, scallops, and I think tartar and carpaccio (we love seafood and it's done well here). The menu is smaller, but it changes so if you are here for a while there will be new things to try. The cocktails were delicious and varied, and the wine list was excellent. We also highly recommend the boat tour with the Egmont Adventure Centre to Princess Louisa Inlet and the majestic Chatterbox falls. You get outfitted in warm suits and a little charcuterie lunch was included during the stop at the stunning chatterbox falls. These are some of the BEST views in BC and relatively untouched! We were treated to a float plane ride back, which was so fun (and would have been worth the splurge) although the zodiac boat ride on the way in was also exhilarating and informative. If you cannot manage to stay at the WCWL overnight, a visit for a meal here on the way to a ferry or a day trip is completely worth the drive! You will not regret the views! This giveaway getaway was adventurous, relaxing, luxurious, and fulfilling and we can only hope to come back one day. We heartily recommend the WCWL! Thank you so much!!

West Coast Wilderness Lodge is a truly magical destination for anyone looking to recharge in nature’s beauty while still enjoying all the comforts of a luxurious getaway. Nestled on a cliff with panoramic views of the Pacific and fjords, the lodge offers a serene escape where every detail has been thoughtfully crafted for relaxation and connection with the environment. The accommodations were fantastic—each cottage beautifully appointed, cozy, and inviting, with modern touches that blend perfectly with the rustic surroundings. From the luxurious shower to the private patio overlooking the forest and inlet, every aspect of the space invited calm and relaxation. I loved waking up to the sounds of nature and taking in the morning light from my patio—a perfect start to each day. The food at the Inlet Restaurant was absolutely delicious! Each meal was prepared with care, using fresh local ingredients, and the dining experience only got better as the ambiance perfectly complemented the stunning views of the inlet. One evening, there was a power outage, and the team didn’t miss a beat—candle-lit tables created a cozy, unforgettable experience that felt incredibly special. Throughout my stay, the activities offered, from kayaking tours to forest bathing, provided an opportunity to truly immerse myself in the surrounding natural beauty. The lodge staff was warm, welcoming, and attentive, always ready to make sure every moment was perfect. I left feeling completely recharged and inspired. If you’re looking for a unique retreat with exceptional service, breathtaking scenery, and a deep connection to nature, West Coast Wilderness Lodge is the place to go.
